Join us over lunchtime this Thursday for a neighborhood walk in the sunshine to help make safer and friendlier streets with the Walkability Survey. The walk will begin at noon at the corner of Pelham and Doane at the edge of Desnoyer Park and will head up to the Raymond Station. This particular walk is convened by Annie Johnson from Union Park District Council and Lauren Fulner-Erickson from St. Anthony Park Community Council.
Transportation
St. Anthony Park has long managed the impact of traffic caused by industrial uses and proximity to regional rail corridors. We recognize the environmental and health benefits of walking and biking and reduced reliance on the auto and the sustainable development opportunities posed by LRT and industrial land conversion. St. Anthony Park envisions a healthy balance of transportation options. Such options will encourage transit, bicycle and pedestrian connections between homes and workplaces and between workplaces and commercial services.
Because of our commitment to balanced transportation choices and our interest in protecting the human-scale appeal of the neighborhood, we are currently working with the City to advise them as they do a transportation study of the NW quadrant of St. Paul.
Walk With Us!
How Do We Get to Light Rail?
Join us for the St Anthony Park Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Meeting on May 22, Langford Recreation Center 6:30-8pm to discuss concerns and ideas about cycling and walking in the neighborhood and connecting to Light Rail Transit (LRT). Guests include Smart Ride designer Antonio Rosell. We will discuss biking improvements, improvements for pedestrians, and a report on the recent Walkability survey.
This event is organized by the Community Council's Environmental Committee. For more information, contact Lauren Fulner-Erickson 651-649-5992, lauren@sapcc.org.

Comment on Transit Service Study
Metro Transit is in the midst of a Central Corridor Transit Service Study, and is looking for your comments on the draft plan. There are five meetings planned for June:
Transportation Committee Meeting
The Community Council's first meeting of the new Transportation Committee is this coming Monday. All of our committees are open to community members- all you have to do is attend three meetings. The agenda is below. Email lauren@sapcc.org with any questions about this specific committee or our other two committees (Land Use Committee and Environment Committee).
Central Corridor Transit Service Study
In anticipation of the new light rail line, Metro Transit is reviewing bus service to maximize effectiveness and efficiency. The Central Corridor Transit Service Study will look at development projects and other plans to ensure that transit service meets needs now and in the future. Learn more about the study here, and take a survey to provide your input on needed transit connections.
Five Things You Can Do to Help Spread Information About Light Rail Construction
Construction may be nearly completed in St. Anthony Park, but it's just beginning on the Eastern segment of University and on our Minneapolis border. Check out these tips from the District Councils Collaborative to share info with your neighbors.
Creating Great Routes to Walk to Light Rail
St. Paul needs good ways to walk to light rail! Now is the time to begin building momentum for sidewalk and street improvements around the light rail corridor. The Walkability Survey focuses on walks from neighborhood locations to future LRT stations. Everyone is encouraged to walk the route and fill out a survey so that we know what improvements need to be made so each walk to the station is safe, accessible and enjoyable.
Metro Transit to Hold Open Houses for Rapid Bus Plan
Metro Transit will host four public meetings in February and March to share results and from a study of 11 high-demand travel corridors for new “rapid bus” service.
Rapid bus service, also known as Arterial Bus Rapid Transit, will improve travel speed, increase reliability, enhance the quality of the ride and create faster connections on major arterial roadways. The service concept eliminates trip delays by stopping less frequently, speeding boarding times and incorporating technology that reduces time spent waiting at traffic lights.
Streetcar Study
The City of Saint Paul has announced a $250,000 year long streetcar study, which will explore the viability of adding streetcars to the existing Central Corridor multi-modal system. The study will explore economic and social benefits, as well as ridership and cost.
Transit Oriented Development Guidebook for the Central Corridor
Light rail transit represents a tremendous opportunity for new investment along University Avenue. The City of Saint Paul welcomes existing business and property owners, and others looking for new opportunities to consider investing in the Central Corridor. The purpose of the Saint Paul Transit-Oriented Development Guidebook is to help you find the information you need to make the most of these opportunities. The Guidebook is a reference that includes key business tips, guiding plans, and design development principles for the Central Corridor in Saint Paul.
Participate in Next Year's Discover Central Corridor Coupon Book
All retailers along the Central Corridor are invited to participate in a coupon book that will be printed in early January 2012 and 50,000 copies will be distributed at no charge at events and venues through June 2012. All interested participants must be willing to supply an "introductory offer" that is equal to, or more significant, than a "Buy One/Get One half off" type of offer. Any lesser offer will not be accepted. Businesses who offer a "Buy One/Get One Free" in the previous coupon book had significantly more redemptions than other offers. If you are looking to drive traffic to your business, the Discover Central Corridor team recommends a "Buy One/Get One Free" offer, or a "Buy One/Get One for $1" offer.
Become a Trusted Advocate for Metro Transit's Pilot Program
As a part of the implementation of Central Corridor LRT in 2012, Metro Transit will be conducting a transit service study to investigate the best ways to integrate bus and LRT transit service in the corridor. In order to do this, strong community input is needed so transit planners can better understand the ways Central Corridor community members use transit and how they would like to use it if given the opportunity to connect.
Northwest Quadrant Transportation Study Underway
The City of St. Paul is doing a study to review of current and future transportation needs of the northwest quadrant of St. Paul based on planned redevelopment, neighborhood goals, local and regional needs. The goal is to develop a balanced area transportation plan.
The area covered by the study runs from Larpenteur to 94, and the Minneapolis border (just west of 280) to Snelling. Representatives from St. Anthony Park, Union Park, Hamline Midway, and the business community will be meeting monthly with City of St. Paul staff and a consultant hired to plan, model and engineer to complete the study.
See below for the agenda from the first meeting that occurred on November 17 as well as the RFP submitted that provides a detailed description of the plan for the study. A link to the City's page on the study will be added as soon as it goes live
