Getting around
H Line station at Como & Doswell: the week’s biggest conversation
More than 100 messages this week. Some neighbors are circulating a petition against the planned station, citing crossing visibility for pedestrians and school patrols, impacts on nearby businesses and trees, and a preference for Como & Carter by the library. Others support the location and point to Metro Transit’s updated analysis of the alternatives. Metro Transit takes comments at HLine@metrotransit.org.
Elections
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3
Polls are open 7 am–8 pm, and you can find your polling place with the Minnesota Poll Finder. The Saint Paul School Board is on the ballot. A neighbor asked for help sizing up the candidates, and replies pointed to a League of Women Voters candidate forum recording, Sahan Journal’s candidate interviews and MPR’s profiles.
Correction
Defensive driving class moves to December 1
The free 55+ defensive driving class previously listed for Tuesday, November 3 has moved. St. Anthony Park Area Seniors will now hold it on Tuesday, December 1, 12:30–4:30 pm. The four-hour course may qualify you for an auto-insurance discount, first-timers are welcome, and registration is still required at sapaseniors.org.
Community Events
Halloween
Pumpkins-in-the-Park glows through Halloween
Rain didn’t stop the 7th annual pumpkin patch at Alden Square Park. It’s lit nightly around dusk through Saturday, October 31, and you can still bring your own carved pumpkin to add to the picnic tables.
Halloween
Costumes, trains and a garage maze
Little ones ages 2 to 5 can join the Fri-Yay! Costume Party at Roseville Library on Friday, October 30, 10:30–11:15 am, with storytime, activities and trick-or-treating (from the Park Bugle’s Halloween roundup). On Saturday, the Twin City Model Railroad Museum runs Halloween Night Trains, 3–7 pm, with spooky layouts, costumes welcome and treats ($10, tcmrm.org). And a North St. Anthony Park family turned their garage into a cardboard adventure maze with hieroglyphs to find, open Saturday 4–8 pm, rain or shine. Some crawling is required; it’s been tested by a 2-year-old and a 6’3” adult. The location is in the ListServ post.
Seniors
Equal Portions lunch on aging in place, November 19
St. Anthony Park Area Seniors and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church host Shalom Home and Community-Based Services on living safely at home, Thursday, November 19, noon–1:30 pm, at St. Matthew’s. Lunch is $15, or bring your own for free. Reserve by Wednesday, November 11 through sapaseniors.org.

SAP Elementary fifth graders and volunteers will rake yards over the next two weekends, weather permitting. The suggested donation is $50, and every dollar goes to the school’s Wolf Ridge trip, where about a third of students need scholarships. Sign up or give on the GiveMN page.

There’s still time to get your North Star Apple Crisp ice cream, a local seasonal flavor with a short window. Getting ready for winter
Recommendation threads this week covered snow removal, sealing out mice, replacing tar-and-gravel roofs and financial planners. A neighborhood youth crew is also taking snow-removal sign-ups through November 25. And neighbors reminded each other that Ramsey County’s household hazardous waste sites take leftover paint, cleaners and other household chemicals at no charge.

A busy week on the ListServ
More than 250 messages across about 70 topics, and the Como & Doswell station thread alone drew over 100. Neighbors gave away 28 things, from shelving and a grill to a piano, plants, paint and kids’ games. There were also a loose dog and coyote sightings in South St. Anthony Park, plus requests for winter clothing, a walker or a hand. These move fast, so check the ListServ if you can help.
