If you’re looking for a reminder that good food and good company can bring folks together, just ask the St. Anthony Park Community Council’s Equity Committee. Recently in late January, they hosted a Community Meal at Seal Hi-Rise in South St. Anthony Park—turning a cold winter’s day into a warm gathering of neighbors and friends.

“We wanted this event to feel like sitting around a big dining table with family,” says Melissa Pappas, Co-Chair of the Equity Committee. “Our goal is to help neighbors get to know one another, share stories, and strengthen connections in a comfortable setting.”

The success of the meal wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of local sponsors: Herbst Eatery and Farm Stand, Lanna Thai, Colossal Cafe, Nico’s Taco Bar on Como, Hampden Park Co-Op, Tim and Tom’s Speedy Market, and Rob Stokes, a local musician who kept spirits high with live music throughout the afternoon. Volunteers helped serve the spread, making sure guests had plenty of food, music, and friendly conversation.

John Maurer, a volunteer on the Equity Committee (and SAPCC Treasurer), was thrilled to see how the event lifted everyone’s spirits. “It was wonderful to watch folks come together over a shared meal,” he says. “Moments like these remind us why building strong, inclusive communities matters so much.”

A special shoutout goes to the Seal Hi-Rise residents for welcoming the event into their home. Keep an eye on SAPCC’s website and social media for future Equity Committee gatherings—because sometimes all it takes is a hot meal and good music to make a neighborhood feel just like family.
